Delta V and the Rocket Equation

▶ Table of Contents

The Tsiolkovsky Rocket Equation

Konstantin Tsiolkovsky
Δv Delta V - The Maximum change of velocity of the vehicle (with no external forces acting)
Ve Exhaust Velocity - The effective exhaust velocity
m0 Initial Mass - Total mass including propellant.
m1 Final Mass - Mass with no Propellant

What is Delta V?

Units

Exhaust Velocity (Ve)

Exhaust Velocity is measured in speed (such as m/s) and is the speed at which the exhaust leaves the rocket.

Specific Impulse (Isp)

Notes

You can calculate thrust with the following equation:
Fthrust=Ve
Where:
Fthrust
Thrust (N)
Ve
Exhaust Velocity (m/s)
Mass flow rate (Kg/s).
